The Cebu Taoist Temple or The Philippine Taoist Temple Inc. is located inside Beverly Hills Subdivision, Cebu. The building of Cebu Taoist Temple was developed in 1972 by an assembly of Chinese. The main sanctuary is raised over 270 meters above the ocean level and the highest area is something like 300 meters above ocean level. It has a close-by temple named Phu Sian built by another Chinese Community yet is not open to general society.

Cebu Taoist Temple is open to both worshippers and non-worshippers from 8am-5pm. The devotees generally pray to the Gods to allow their wishes and make a request for replies to both minor and major choices in life. Guests can ask for wishes and responses if the Head or the Temple Attendant is there.

The custom incorporates washing of hands, going inside the church barefoot and dropping two blocks of wood. Assuming that the squares of wood are both confront up then one could make a wish. If not then it is not yet the time for one’s wish to be allowed and one needs to go to the sanctuary some other time.

The temple is the center of worship for Taoism, the religion which takes after the teachings of the old Chinese philosopher Lao Zi. An alternate ritual around Taoist devotees, which is carried out during Wednesdays and Sundays, is the climbing of its 81 steps (speaking to the 81 sections of Taoism scriptures) to light joss sticks and have their fortune read by the monks.

The passage to the sanctuary is a replica of the Great Wall of China. The temple incorporates a house of prayer, a library, a souvenir shop and a wishing well. The spacious balconies offer a grand perspective view of the downtown Cebu.

Getting There: Taoist Temple is a bit far but going there is relatively safe. You can ride a jeepney that is going to Lahug(signage) or you can ride a taxi cab. If you ride a jeepney, you can drop off at JY Square Mall. From JY Square Mall, ride a habal-habal (motorycycle) to bring you to the entrance of Beverly Hills Subdivision. You can also ride a habal-habal in JY Square mall if you are planning to go to Cebu TOPS. Public motorcycles are not allowed inside the premises of the said subdivision so you have to walk from the gate to the temple. Ask the guard on duty for directions. Walking along the tree-lined streets of the village takes approximately 15 minutes.
